You know a movie is good if you don’t know what will happen next or how it will end. The unpredictability of a compelling story is what keeps you on the edge of your seat and ARRIVAL delivers that.
ARRIVAL is based on a science fiction short story by author Ted Chiang called “Story of your life”. The story asks for answers when we find out that we are not alone in the universe. What happens to humanity when 12 unidentified flying objects land in different parts of the world? Will there be panic and mass hysteria? Who takes the lead? The problem is, Earth does not have one sole leader. To add to the mix, the visitors don’t do anything. They don’t leave the ships. They don’t attack. No one knows what their purpose is for arriving on Earth.
Amy Adams stars as Doctor Louise Banks, a linguistics professor who is hired by the US Government to communicate to the aliens they called “Heptapods”. Her mission and objective is to find out what their purpose is on Earth through peaceful means with the help of Ian Donnelly played by Jeremey Renner. World leaders are anxious, worried, and restless as they need to know why the aliens arrived and Louise needs to manage all the different egos and calm them down. The assumption of an invasion and war is there and world leaders can’t help but be pessimistic about this. Louise, on the other hand, is optimistic and she is gifted when it comes to communication and deciphering symbols used by the Heptapods. She ties it all together as help also comes in the form of the memories of her daughter who passed away.
ARRIVAL is a movie that you should watch from the beginning. Miss the start and for sure you will get lost and confused. Make time to buy your snacks and go to the restroom ahead of time because people who see it from the beginning will get the payoff in the end. The story posts a scenario wherein the international community MUST work together and the dynamics you see on screen does wonders. What’s compelling in the story is how the world reacts to the occasion of aliens arriving. The clear problem is that we do not have on sole leader running the show. How should humanity tackle this if it happens? Can humanity survive?
